You can purchase a full color, ad free, printable PDF here.

Get ready for fall with this super warm, and very cozy granny square ruana!

You can wear your ruana strait down in front, or make a cute clip with your leftover yarn and wrap it up.

I just love pink and grey together, and not just for little girls.  And with the slight touches of purple, this yarn works up beautifully!

Main Square

Start with a slip knot and ch 4, sl st to form a ring.

row 1: ch 3, 2 dc in centre ring, ch 2

  • skip 2 dc and dc in the last st

row 4: ch 3, turn, 2 dc in the next space

  • (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in the ch 2 corner
  • (skip 3 st, dc cl in the space between the dc stitches) repeat until the next corner space
    • repeat the above steps until you reach the last corner

skip 2 dc and dc in the last st

row 6: ch 3, turn, 2 dc in the next space

  • (skip 3 st, dc cl in the space between the dc stitches) repeat until the next corner space
  • (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in the ch 2 corner
    • repeat the above steps until you reach the last corner
  • (skip 3 st, dc cl in the space between the dc stitches) repeat until there is 1 space left

skip 3 dc, 2 dc in the last space, and dc in the last st

rnd 7- 16: repeat rows 5 and 6

Cut your yarn, weave in any ends. Get your small squares and arrange them around the main square how ever you like, 4 per side, and 1 in each corner.

Starting at the opening, place the desired square right side to the ruana and whip stitch it in place. Only stitch though the back loops (outside loops on each piece). Continue until all your squares are attached. Then whip stitch the squares to each other along the sides and attach the corners in the same way.

Join yarn in the corner of the small square next to the opening

row 17: ch 3, 2 dc in the next space

  • (skip 3 st, dc cl in the space between the dc stitches) repeat until the next corner space
  • when you reach the point where two small squares meet, dc in first ch 2 space, dc dec across both ch 2 spaces, and dc in second ch 2 space

  • (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in the ch 2 corner
    • repeat the above steps until you reach the last corner
  • (skip 3 st, dc cl in the space between the dc stitches) repeat until there is 1 space left

skip 3 dc, 2 dc in the last space, and dc in the last st

rows 18-24: repeat rows 5 and 6

Now you will make the front and back edges a little longer.

Row 25: ch 3, turn, 2 dc in the next space

  • (skip 3 st, dc cl in the space between the dc stitches) repeat until the corner space
  • place 1 dc in the ch 2 space

row 26:ch 3, turn, 2 dc in the next space

  • (skip 3 st, dc cl in the space between the dc stitches) repeat until the end
  • place 1 dc in the last st

Row 27-35: repeat row 26

Finish off and weave in any ends. Attach your yarn to the inside corner other side of the opening and repeat rows 25-35.

Join yarn in the ch 2 corner space on the opposite side (the back of the ruana).

Row 1: ch 3,

  • (skip 3 st, dc cl in the space between the dc stitches) repeat until the corner space
  • place 1 dc in the ch 2 space

row 2: ch 3, turn, 2 dc in the next space

  • (skip 3 st, dc cl in the space between the dc stitches) repeat until the second last space
  • 2 dc in the last space
  • place 1 dc in the last st

row 3: ch 3, turn

  • skip 3 st, dc cl in the space between the dc stitches) repeat until the end
  • place 1 dc in the final stitch

rows 4-11: repeat rows 2 and 3.

Finish off and weave in any ends.

Edging

With the right side of the ruana facing you, join yarn with a sl st at the bottom of the front opening.

  • Sc evenly around the whole ruana
    • when working into the top of stitches, 1 sc in each stitch
    • when working into the sides of dc stitches, 2 sc along each st
    • when working into corner, do 3 sc in the corner st or ch space

Clip (optional)

Using scraps of chunky yarn, or any yarn of your choosing, and corresponding hook.

Start with an mc,

rnd 1: 12 sc in mc, sl st to the first sc

  • when closing your magic circle, do not pull it completely closed, leave am open circle in the center

rnd 2: ch 1, (sc in 1st st, 2hdc in next, sc in next) repeat around, sl st to the first sc.

Rnd 3: join main color yarn, ch 1, and sc in each st around. Sl st to the first sc.

Finish off your yarn and weave in any ends.

Curls

using your scrap yarn, or any yarn left over from the ruana (and corresponding hook) ch 20.

row 1: 3 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 3 sc in each chain to the end. Cut yarn, leave ends to attach to your square

I made 2 curls, 1 in the main color, 1 in grey.

Attach the curls to the back of the square and attach them to your clip.
