Ruffles the Elephant Lovey

Size

Blanket – 16” (41 cm) square

Elephant – 6” (15 cm) long, 4” (10 cm) high

  • ch – chain

  • inc – single crochet increase – work 2 sc into same st

  • dc cl – 3 dc worked into same space

Blanket

ch 3 at the start of each round counts as a dc

With Cookies and Cream yarn and 3.5 mm hook, make a slip knot, ch 3, and sl st to form a ring

rnd 1: ch 3, 2 dc in center ring, ch 2

  • 3 dc in center ring, ch 2
    • repeat above 3 times
  • St st to top of ch 3

rnd 2: sl st slightly back into ch 2 space and ch 3, 2 dc into same space.

  • Skip 3 dc, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in the ch 2 space
    • repeat in the next two ch 2 spaces
  • 3 dc, ch 2 in the first ch 2 space
  • Sl st to top of ch 3

rnd 3: sl st slightly back into the ch 2 space and ch 3, 2 dc in the same space.

  1. Skip 3 dc and dc cl in the space between the dcs,
  2. skip 3 dc and (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc), in the ch 2 corner
  • repeat lines 1 and 2 until you reach your first ch 2 space
  • 3 dc, ch 2 in the ch 2 space
  • Sl st to the top of the ch 3

rnd 4 – 22 :sl st slightly back into the ch 2 space and ch 3, 2 dc in the corner space.

  1. skip 3 dc and dc cl in the space between the dcs
    • repeat line 1 until you reach the next ch 2 space
  1. (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc), in the ch 2 corner
  • repeat lines 1 and 2 until you reach the first ch 2 space
  • 3 dc, ch 2 in the ch 2 space
  • Sl st to the top of the ch 3

Switch to white yarn

rnd 23: join with a sl st in space between 2 dc clusters just before a corner

  • 8 dc into ch 2 space
  1. skip 3 dc and sl st between the clusters
  2. skip 3 dc and 5 dc between the clusters
  • repeat lines 1 and 2 until you reach the next corner
  • 8 dc into ch 2 space
  • repeat around until you reach your first corner. Sl st to the beginning sl st.

Form here the elephant parts will be worked in continuous rounds, do not join at the end of each round, just continue to work in a spiral. Make sure to mark your first or last stitch in each round to keep track of where to begin your next round.

Elephant

Head

Using Cookies and Cream, and a 3.0 mm hook

rnd 1: start with an MC, and sc 6 (6 st)

rnd 2: inc around (12 st)

rnd 3: (sc, inc) repeat around (18 st)

rnd 4: scblo around (18 st)

rnd 5-14: sc around (18 st)

rnd 15: (2 sc, inc) repeat around (24 st)

rnd 16: sc around (24 st)

rnd 17: (3 sc, inc) repeat around (30 st)

rnd 18: (4 sc, inc) repeat around (36 st)

rnd 19-20: sc around (36 st)

rnd 21: (5 sc, inc) repeat around (42 st)

rnd 22: (6 sc, sc inc) repeat around (48 st)

rnd 23-25: sc around (48 st)

rnd 26: (7 sc, sc inc) repeat around (54 st)

rnd 27: (8 sc, sc inc) repeat around (60 st)

rnd 28 – 36: sc around (60 st)

Start stuffing the head now.

Finish stuffing the head as much as possible.

Cut yarn, leave a long tail. Sew up the small hole in the top of the head, and weave in any ends.

Ears

Make 2. Not worked in continuous rounds, ch 3 at the beginning of the round is counted as a dc.

Using Cookies and Cream, and a 3.0 mm hook

ch 4, st st to form a ring

rnd 1: ch 3, 2 dc in center ring, ch 2

  • 3 dc in center ring, ch 2
    • repeat above 7 times
  • St st to top of ch 3

rnd 2: sl st slightly back into ch 2 space and ch 3, 2 dc into same space.

  • Skip 3 dc, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in the ch 2 space
    • repeat in the next 6 ch 2 spaces
  • 3 dc, ch 2 in the first ch 2 space
  • Sl st to top of ch 3

rnd 3: sl st slightly back into the ch 2 space and ch 3, 2 dc in the same space.

1. Skip 3 dc and dc cl in the space between the dcs,

2. skip 3 dc and (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc), in the ch 2 corner

  • repeat lines 1 and 2 until you reach your first ch 2 space

Switch to white yarn and fold the octagon in half.

Working through all 4 loops (2 loops from each half),

Ch 3, 3 dc into same st, place 4 dc in each st and ch until the end. Cut yarn and weave in any ends.

Arms

Make 2 using Cookies and Cream, and a 3.0 mm hook

rnd 1: start with an MC, and sc 6 (6 st)

rnd 2: inc around (12 st)

rnd 3: (sc, inc) repeat around (18 st)

rnd 4: (2 sc, inc) repeat around (24 st)

rnd 5: scblo around (24 st)

rnd 6-17: sc around (24 st)

sl st into the next st, cut yarn, leave a long tail for sewing. Stuff the arms, and sew the top together.

Assembly

Pin the arms to the underside of the head as shown and sew them in place.

Pin and sew the elephant to the blanket in the center. I stitched from the bottom of the blanket into the head, through rounds 2 and 3 of the blanket.

Pin and sew the ears to the elephant head. I sewed mine on from the back side to hide the stitching as much as possible.

Embroider the eyes and toes using black yarn.
