Merry and Bright Cowl

Use this free crochet pattern to make your own Merry and Bright Cowl.  I have written the pattern for standard child and adult sizes, but you can make it any length or height you like.  Scroll down below the photos to see the full pattern.

Size

Toddler/Child – 19” around, 4.75” high

Adult – 22” around, 6” high

Materials

Abbreviations Used – US Crochet Terms

  • ch – chain
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sc – single crochet
  • fsc – foundation single crochet
  • dc – double crochet

Gauge

9 sts = 4”/10 cm

4 rows dc = 4”/10 cm

  • ch 1 or ch 2 at the beginning of a row does not count as a stitch
  • you can adjust the size of the cowl by adding or subtracting from your starting chain in multiples of 4
  • pattern will have instructions for the toddler/child size, followed by the adult size in brackets

Cowl

Using red yarn, start with a slip knot and ch 44 (56), sl st to form a ring

  • you can also fsc 44 (56), sl st to form a ring and proceed to rnd 2

rnd 1: ch 1, sc in each ch around, sl st to first sc

rnd 2: ch 2, (sk 1 st, dc in next 3 st, cross over the 3 dc and dc in the skipped st) repeat around, sl st to the top of the 1st st

rnd 3: ch 1, sc in each st around, sl st to first sc

rnd 4-7: repeat rounds 2 and 3

For toddler/child size, stop here, tie off and weave in any ends.

Rnd 8-9: repeat rounds 2 and 3

Tie off and weave in any ends.

Join your fluffy yarn in any stitch around the top, ch 1 and sc around. Join with a sl st to the first sc, tie off, and weave in any ends.

Using black yarn, start with a slip knot and ch 7,

row 1: sc in the 2nd ch from hook and each ch across,

row 2: ch 1, turn, sc in each st across

repeat row 2 until the band is 6” (8”) long.

Place it around the cowl over the seam and sew the ends together.

You can add a decorative button if you like.

  1. Hello! I wanted to say I’ve been looking for a new stich and this one is awesome. I’ve been working on a project using this and so far it looks good. Thank you for posting. You’ve got a new fan!

    1. I just love the texture it brings, and if you change the number of dcs before you cross over, it gives a totally different look. I have a scarf pattern coming soon that uses a similar dc cross over stitch.
