Woodlands are a popular theme for babies and nurseries this year.

And really, I am not surprised.  So many cute ideas, and wonderful projects to help decorate and make the space unique.

Or you can just make the little fox hat, in any size with the Easy Peasy HDC Beanie pattern.

Cocoon Size

  • 0-3 months – 24” (61 cm) circumference, 20” (51 cm) long
  • 3-6 months – 28” (71 cm) circumference, 24” (61 cm) long

Hat Size

  • 0-3 months: Fits 14” (36 cm) circumference, 5.5” (14 cm) height
  • 3-6 months: Fits 16” (41 cm) circumference, 5.75” (15 cm) height

Cocoon

Instructions will be written for the 0-3 months size, with any changes for the 3-6 month size in brackets. Stitch counts will be in the format (0-3 months, 3-6 months)

Starting with Carrot yarn, leave a long tail to sew up the bottom, make a slip knot and ch 23 (27). Sl st to form a ring.

  • You could also fsc 23 and sl st to form a ring, and proceed to rnd 2

Rnd 1: ch 1, sc in each ch, sl st to first sc (23, 27)

rnd 2: ch 1, sc inc in each st, sl st to first sc (46, 54)

rnd 3: ch 1, (hdc inc twice, hdc in next st) repeat around, * for 0-3 month size hdc in the final st * sl st to first hdc (76, 90)

rnd 4: ch 1, hdc in each st around, sl st to first hdc (76, 90)

rnd 5-55: repeat round 4

for 3-6 month size

rnd 56-66: repeat round 4

Cut Carrot yarn, and join white yarn with a sl st.

Edge rnd: ch 1, bphdc in each st around, join to first st with a sl st. (76, 90)

Cut white yarn and weave in any ends.

Hat

The hat is worked in continuous rounds, do not slip stitch at the end of each round, just continue to work in a spiral. Mark the first or last stitch of each round to help keep track of where your round ends. Move the stitch marker up each round.

0-3 months

Rnd 1: Start with a magic ring, ch 1, and 10 hdc into ring (10 hdc)

Using orange yarn, sew the snout flap down to the hat.

Ears

Make 2 in white, 2 in orange

Leaving a long tail for sewing, start with a slip knot and ch 6,

row 1: hdc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across (5 hdc)

row 2: ch 1, turn, hdc in each st across (5 hdc)

row 3: ch 1, turn, hdc dec, hdc in next st, hdc dec (3 hdc)

row 4: ch 1, turn, hdc in each st (3 hdc)

row 5: ch 1, turn hdc3tog (1 hdc)

Cut yarn

Holding one white and one orange triangle together and using orange yarn, sc evenly along the two sides of the triangles. Repeat for the other ear.

Attach the ears to the top of the hat as shown.

Using black yarn, embroider the eyes and nose. Add some tufts to the ears if you like.
