After I made the adorable Autumn Joy Baby Dress, how could I not make a matching hat?

And with so many colors available in Red Heart Soft, I just had to try it out in different color schemes.  I just love the variegated colors, and how well they co-ordinate with the solid colors.

Sizes

0-3 months – Fits 14” circumference, 5.5” height

3-6 months – Fits 16” circumference, 5.75” height

6-12 months – Fits 18” circumference, 7.25” height

Gauge

Rows of alternating sc and hdc

15 st = 4” (10 cm)

  • if you want to make the hat in only 2 colors, when asked to change to CC1 and CC2 stay with your MC. Only use your CC1 for the slip stitch details

Using MC yarn, start with an mr

rnd 1: ch 1, 7 sc into mr, sl st to 1st sc (7)

rnd 2: ch 1, 2 sc into each st, sl st to 1st sc (14)

rnd 3: ch 1, (2 sc in 1st st, sc in next) repeat around, sl st to 1st sc (21)

rnd 4: ch 5 (counts as dc, ch 2), dc in same st,

  • skip 2 st, v-stitch in next st
    • repeat around, sl st to 3rd ch of ch 4 (7 v-stitches)

rnd 5: sl st into ch 2 space, ch 3 (counts as dc), dc, ch 2, 2 dc all in ch 2 space

  • skip to next ch 2 space and make a double v-stitch
    • repeat in each ch 2 space around, sl st to beginning ch 3 (7 double v-stitches)

rnd 6: sl st into ch 2 space, ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc all in ch 2 space

  • skip to next ch 2 space and make a shell stitch
    • repeat in each ch 2 space around, sl st to beginning ch 3 (7 shell stitches)

rnd 7: sl st into ch 2 space, ch 3 (counts as dc), 6 dc in ch 2 space

  • skip to next ch 2 space and make 7 dc
    • repeat in each ch 2 space around, sl st to beginning ch 3 (7 groups of 7 dc)

Tie off

switch to CC1

start with a slip knot in your yarn, insert your hook into rnd 4, in the stitch before any v-stitch. Pull up the loop from the slip knot and loosely sl st up the edge of the v-stitches and shell stitches. When you reach the top, sl st across the 7 dc in rnd 7. Continue to sl st down the sides of the shells and v-stitches until you reach rnd 2. You should end in a sc right after the v-stitch. Sl st into the next sc and repeat this process around.

Rnd 8: we will be working into round 6, in the space between the shell stitches. Fold round 7 forward, and join CC1 with a sl st and ch 3

  • 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in the same space
  • skip the next shell, and shell stitch in the space between
    • repeat around and join to ch 3 with a sl st (8 shell stitches)

rnd 9-10: repeat rnd 6

rnd 11: repeat rnd 7

tie off.
