This cute little number was actually inspired by a pot holder.

I just loved the slip stitch edging, and had to incorporate it into the dress.

Just look at those ruffles!

Sizes

0-3 months – waist 15” (38 cm), skirt length 6.5” (16.5 cm)

3-6 months – waist 16.5” (42 cm), skirt length 7” (17.5 cm)

6-12 months – waist 18” (46 cm), skirt length 9” (23 cm)

Abbreviations Used – US Crochet Terms

  • ch – chain
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • dc – double crochet

Gauge

Rows of alternating sc and hdc

15 st = 4” (10 cm)

14 rows = 4” (10 cm)

Shell Rows

3 shells wide = 5” (12.5 cm)

Waistband

using CC1 – start with a slip knot and ch 57 (63, 69), sl st to form a ring

  • you can also fhdc 57 (63, 69) and sl st to form a ring, then proceed to rnd 2

rnd 1: ch 1, hdc in each st around, sl st to beginning st (57, 63, 69)

tie off

Skirt Section 1

switch to MC, join in any st with a sl st

rnd 2: ch 1, sc in each st around (57, 63, 69)

rnd 3: ch 4 (counts as dc, ch 1), dc in same st,

  • skip 2 st, v-stitch in next st
    • repeat around, sl st to 3rd ch of ch 4 (19, 21, 23 v-stitches)

rnd 4: sl st into ch 1 space, ch 3 (counts as dc), dc, ch 2, 2 dc all in ch 1 space

  • skip to next ch 1 space and make a double v-stitch
    • repeat in each ch 1 space around, sl st to beginning ch 3 (19, 21, 23 double v-stitches)

rnd 5: sl st into ch 2 space, ch 3 (counts as dc), dc, ch 2, 2 dc all in ch 2 space

  • skip to next ch 2 space and make a double v-stitch
    • repeat in each ch 2 space around, sl st to beginning ch 3 (19, 21, 23 double v-stitches)

switch to CC2

start with a slip knot in your yarn, insert your hook into rnd 2, in the stitch before any v-stitch. Pull up the loop from the slip knot and loosely sl st up the edge of the v-stitches and shell stitches. When you reach the top, sl st across the 7 dc in rnd 8. Continue to sl st down the sides of the shells and v-stitches until you reach rnd 2. You should end in a sc right after the v-stitch. Sl st into the next sc and repeat this process around.

Skirt Secession 2

Still using CC2

Rnd 9: we will be working into round 7, in the space between the shell stitches. Fold round 8 forward, and join CC2 with a sl st and ch 3

  • 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in the same space
  • skip the next shell, and shell stitch in the space between
    • repeat around and join to ch 3 with a sl st (19, 21, 23 shell stitches)

repeat rnd 6 (4, 4, 5) times

next rnd: sl st into ch 2 space, ch 3 (counts as dc), 6 dc in ch 2 space

  • skip to next ch 2 space and make 7 dc
    • repeat in each ch 2 space around, sl st to beginning ch 3 (19, 21, 23 groups of 7 dc)

tie off.

switch to CC1

start with a slip knot in your yarn, insert your hook into rnd 9 (the first round done in CC2), in the outside stitch of any shell stitch. Pull up the loop from the slip knot and loosely sl st up the edge of the shell stitches. When you reach the top, sl st across the 7 dc. Continue to sl st down the sides of the shells until you reach rnd 9. Sl st over to the next column of shells and continue around.

Skirt Section 3

Still using CC1

Next rnd: we will be working into the final round of shell stitches, in the space between the shell stitches. Fold the dc round forward, and join CC2 with a sl st and ch 3

  • 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in the same space
  • skip the next shell, and shell stitch in the space between
    • repeat around and join to ch 3 with a sl st (19, 21, 23 shell stitches)

repeat rnd 6 (3, 4, 5) times

next rnd: sl st into ch 2 space, ch 3 (counts as dc), 6 dc in ch 2 space

  • skip to next ch 2 space and make 7 dc
    • repeat in each ch 2 space around, sl st to beginning ch 3 (19, 21, 23 groups of 7 dc)

tie off

switch to MC

rnd 2: ch 1, hdc in each st around, join to first hdc with a sl st (57, 63, 69)

for 3-6, repeat rnd 1-2 one more time

for 6-12, repeat rnd 1-2 four more times

Using MC yarn, skip 4 st from the front panel and join with a sl st

row 1: ch 1, sc in the next 25 (28, 31) st

row 2: ch 1, turn, hdc in the next 25 (28, 31) st

row 3: ch 1, turn, sc in the next 25 (28, 31) st

for 0-3, repeat 3 and 2 three more times

for 3-6, repeat 3 and 2 three more times

for 6-12, repeat 3 and 2 four more times

Bring the straps back and sew in place to the back panel.

Edging

Join CC1 yarn in any stitch around the neck opening, ch 1 and sc evenly around the edge. Sl st to first sc.

Repeat for both arm holes.

Weave in any ends.
