You can change colors after any round, you do not have to change colors when I say to. For this set I made 8 place-mats, each one with a different color sequence. Have fun with your color choices and do whatever you like with them.

Materials

  • 2 balls of Bernat Handicrafter per place-mat
    • #4 medium worsted, 100% cotton, 1.75 oz (50g), 80 yds (73 m) per ball
  • I used aquamarine (colour A) and hot green (colour B) for this project
  • 5 mm (H/8) hook

Abbreviations – US Crochet Terms

  • rnd – round
  • ch – chain
  • sl – slip
  • sk – skip
  • st – stitch
  • dc – double crochet
  • (optional) standing dc – start with a slip knot on your hook and wrap yarn around the hook, insert hook into specified st, yarn over, pull through 2 loops, yarn over and pull though 2 loops
  • dc cl – dc cluster – work 3 dc into specified st or space

I used each colorway twice. To make sure I used even amounts of both colors, I reversed the colors for the second place-mat of each option.

Final dimensions are about 15” (38 cm) by 8” (20 cm).

With color A: ch 19

rnd 1:

  • Dc in 4th ch from hook (ch 3 counts as a dc here and through out the pattern).
  • *Sk 2 ch and dc cl the next ch* repeat * to * 4 times.
  • Sk 2 ch st, (dc cl, ch 2, dc cl, ch 2, dc cl) all in the final ch.
  • Working along the other side of the ch, * sk 2 ch, dc cl in the next ch* repeat * to * 4 times.
  • Sk 2 ch, in the next ch (dc cl, ch 2, dc cl, ch 2), sl st to the top of ch 3.

If you want to keep working with the same color in the next row, just slip stitch over to the next chain 2 space and start working your next row from there. If you want to change colors, start your next row with a standing double crochet (or chain 3).
