Size

Blanket – 16” (41 cm) square

Owl – 5” (13 cm) by 4” (10 cm)

Materials

  • light worsted/dk yarn (#3) – I used Lion Brand Big Scoop in Mint (90 grams, less than 1/3 of the ball), and Loops and Threads Snuggly Wuggly in white and some scraps of yellow and black
  • 3.5 mm (E/4) hook for the blanket
  • 3.0 mm hook (C or D) for the owl
  • small amount of polyfil
  • tapestry needle
  • scissors
  • stitch marker

Abbreviations – US crochet terms

  • ch – chain
  • sl. st. – slip stitch
  • sc – single crochet
  • sc inc – single crochet increase – work 2 sc into same st
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • hdc inc – half double crochet increase – work 2 hdc into same st
  • dc – double crochet
  • mc – magic circle
  • dc cl – 3 dc worked into same space

Blanket

ch 3 at the start of each round counts as a dc

with your main color yarn and 3.5 mm hook, make a slip knot, ch 3, and sl st to form a ring

 

rnd 1: ch 3, 2 dc in center ring, ch 2

  • 3 dc in center ring, ch 2
    • repeat above 3 times
  • St st to top of ch 3

rnd 2: sl st slightly back into ch 2 space and ch 3, 2 dc into same space.

  • Skip 3 dc, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in the ch 2 space
    • repeat in the next two ch 2 spaces
  • 3 dc, ch 2 in the first ch 2 space
  • Sl st to top of ch 3

rnd 3: sl st slightly back into the ch 2 space and ch 3, 2 dc in the same space.

  1. Skip 3 dc and dc cl in the space between the dcs,
  2. skip 3 dc and (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc), in the ch 2 corner
  • repeat lines 1 and 2 until you reach your first ch 2 space
  • 3 dc, ch 2 in the ch 2 space
  • Sl st to the top of the ch 3

rnd 4 – 22 :sl st slightly back into the ch 2 space and ch 3, 2 dc in the corner space.

  1. skip 3 dc and dc cl in the space between the dcs
    • repeat line 1 until you reach the next ch 2 space
  1. (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc), in the ch 2 corner
  • repeat lines 1 and 2 until you reach the first ch 2 space
  • 3 dc, ch 2 in the ch 2 space
  • Sl st to the top of the ch 3

Switch to white yarn

rnd 23: join with a sl st in space between 2 dc clusters just before a corner

  • 8 dc into ch 2 space
  1. skip 3 dc and sl st between the clusters
  2. skip 3 dc and 5 dc between the clusters
  • repeat lines 1 and 2 until you reach the next corner
  • 8 dc into ch 2 space
  • repeat around until you reach your first corner. Sl st to the beginning sl st.

Form here the owl parts will be worked in continuous rounds, do not join at the end of each round, just continue to work in a spiral. Make sure to mark your first or last stitch in each round to keep track of where to begin your next round.

Owl

Use Mint yarn and a 3 mm hook, leave a long tail to attack the owl to the blanket.

rnd 1: start with an MC, and sc 6 (6 st)

rnd 2: sc inc around (12 st)

rnd 3: (sc, sc inc), repeat d (18 st)

rnd 4: (2 sc, sc inc) repeat around (24 st)

rnd 5: (3 sc, sc inc) repeat around (30 st)

rnd 6: (4 sc, sc inc) repeat around (36 st)

rnd 7: (5 sc, sc inc) repeat around (42 st)

rnd 8: (6 sc, sc inc) repeat around (48 st)

rnd 9: (7 sc, sc inc) repeat around (54 st)

rnd 10: (8 sc, sc inc) repeat around (60 st)

rnd 11- 34: sc around (60 st)

Finish off, and leave a long tail for sewing. Firmly stuff the owl, and sew the top edge closed.

 

Eyes – make 2

Use white yarn and a 3 mm hook.

rnd 1: start with an MC, and hdc 10 (10 st)

rnd 2: hdc inc around (20 st)

sc in the next st, sl st to next stitch and finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Using scraps of black yarn, embroider eyelids and lashes on the circles. Pin and sew the eyes to the owl.

Beak

Use yellow yarn and 3 mm hook.

start with a slip knot, and ch 4

row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in next ch, dc in last ch.

Finish off and leave a long tail for sewing. Pin and sew the beak to the owl.

Owl Wings – make 2

Use Mint yarn and 3 mm hook.

rnd 1: start with an MC and 3 sc in the ring (3 st)

rnd 2: sc inc around (6 st)

rnd 3: (sc, sc inc) repeat around (9 st)

rnd 4: (2 sc, sc inc) repeat around (12 st)

rnd 5-7: sc around (12 st)

rnd 8: (2 sc, sc inc) repeat around (16 st)

rnd 9-10 sc around (16 st)

rnd 11: (3 sc, sc inc) repeat around (20 st)

rnd 12-16: sc around (20 st)

ch 1 and sl st the open end of the wing together. Finish off and leave a long tail for sewing.

Pin the wings to the owl and sew them in place.

Cut 8 – 6 inch pieces of Mint yarn, and attach them to the corners of the owl head. Insert your hook into the desired space and fold 4 of the yarn strands in half and loop them over the hook. Pull the loops through the owl and pass the ends into the loop and pull tight. Trim the ends to the desired length.

Than sew the owl to the center of the blanket.
