With Splatfest this weekend (team Ice Cream all the way) , and the release of Splatoon 2 next Friday (My day off! Coincidence?), I just had to crochet everybody’s favorite lazy referee.

Materials

  • medium worsted weight yarn (#4)
    • I used red heart comfort in black and white, and some scraps of pink, yellow and red for the details.
    • 1 ball each of black and white (at least 100 g balls) would be enough for this project.
  • 5.0 mm (H/8) hook
  • tapestry needle
  • scissors
  • polyester stuffing (or any stuffing material of your choice)

Abbreviations Used – US crochet terms:

  • mc – magic circle
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • ch – chain
  • sc – single crochet
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • dc – double crochet
  • sc4tog – insert hook into 1st, pull up a loop, pull up a loop in the nest 3 stitches as well. Yarn over and pull through all loops.
  • inc – 2 sc worked into same stitch
  • dec – work one sc over 2 stitches

Final size:

Judd sits about 12” tall, but this can be slightly different based on yarn and hook size used.

How to change colors

On the last stitch of color A, insert your hook into the stitch and pull up a loop . Now yarn over with color B and finish the stitch. Continue along with color B until you need to change colors again.

All parts of the pattern are worked in continuous rounds. Do not sl st to join at the end of your rows. Continue to work in a spiral. Use a stitch marker to make your first or last stitch to keep track of where your round begins and ends.

Feet and Legs – make 2

Using white yarn, and starting with each toe:

rnd 1: 6 sc into mc (6)

rnd 2: (sc, inc) around (9)

rnd 3-4: sc around (9)

sl st into next stitch, break yarn, and leave a long tail.

Make 2 more toes, but after the last one do not cut yarn.

Attaching the toes:

With the toe you are currently working with, remove your hook and count back 5 stitches. Using the tail from one of the other toes, sl st the toes together over 2 sc. Sl st the final toe to the middle one, with 2 sc skipped.

Skipping the stitches that have been sl st together

rnd 5: sc around (19)

  • 3 sc on 1st toe
  • 3 sc on middle toe
  • 7 sc on last toe
  • 2 sc on middle toe
  • 4 sc on first toe

rnd 6-7: sc around (19)

rnd 8: dec, 6 sc, dec, 9 sc (17)

sc in the next 2 st

you will be working in rows for the rest of the foot.

Row 9-11: ch 1, turn, 13 sc (13)

row 12: 3 dec, sc, 3 dec (7)

rnd 1: ch 1, working around the top of the foot, 9 sc evenly around (9)

rnd 2: skipping the opening at the back, sc around (9)

rnd 31: (sc, 2 dec, sc, dec) repeat 4 times, 4 dec (24)

Sl st into the next st and leave a long tail for sewing.

Head

We will be changing colors on the head. Since we are only doing 1 section of black at a time on a white head, I only carry the white yarn under the black stitches, and when I switch to white, I drop the back yarn and just pick it up on the next round. This leaves trails of yarn, but its on the inside of the head and will never be seen.

Stitches that need to be done in black will be between { }.

Using white yarn

rnd 1: 6 sc into mc (6)

rnd 2: 2 inc, {2 inc}, 2 inc (12)

rnd 3: (sc, inc) x2, {sc, inc, sc, inc, sc}, (inc, sc, inc) (18)

Sl st to the next st and leave a long tail for sewing.

Ears – make 4 (2 pink, 1 white, 1 black)

Make the two pink pieces first, when they are done, cut yarn. When making the white a black pieces, do not cut the yarn when you are done, you will attack them to the pink pieces.

row 1: ch 7,

  • sc in 2nd chain from hook,
  • 1 sc in the next 4 chains

  • working along the other side of the beginning chain, 5 sc, you will have 13 sc at this point

  • 3 sc in the next stitch (should be the middle sc from the 3 sc in round 1)
  • sc in the next 3 st, hdc in next 2 st, dc in last st

Assembling the Ears
Take 2 of your ear pieces (one pink and one black or white), and place them together with wrong sides facing. Using the yarn still attached to your second piece, make 1 sc in each sc around. Make sure you work through both loops of each piece (work under 4 loops total). Do not crochet along the bottom edge. Pull yarn through to finish off, cut your yarn, leaving a long tail. Weave in any ends.

Hands and Arms – make 2

sl st into next stitch, break yarn, and leave a long tail.

Make 2 more fingers, but after the last one do not cut yarn.

Attaching the fingers:

With the finger you are currently working with, remove your hook and count back 5 stitches. Using the tail from one of the other fingers, sl st the fingers together over 2 sc. Sl st the final finger to the middle one, with 2 sc skipped.

Skipping the stitches that have been sl st together

Assembly

Sew the stripes and the bow tie to the body, as seen in the picture.

Spacing:

  • 10 stitches between the front stripes
  • center the bow tie between the front stripes
  • going to the left, skip 8 stitches and attach the next stripe
  • skip 3 stitches and attach the second back stripe
  • going to the right, skip 8 stitches and attach the next stripe
  • skip 3 stitches and attach the last back stripe

Firmly stuff the head and body, and sew the openings together with the stitches lined up. You want the medium black circle lined up with the right front stripe.

Attach the toe and foot pads to the feet and hands.

Attach the feet to the body, between rounds 4-6, about 3” apart.

Attach the arms to the body, about 3 rounds from the top of the body.

Attach the tail to the back of the body, at the top of the black section (rnd 11).

Attach the ears to the head, with the black ear on the black circle.

Sew the nose to the center of the snout.

Pin the mouth and snout into place. Sew the mouth in place. For the snout, sew most of the way around, stuff underneath slightly and finish sewing.

Attach the eyes.

Weave in any ends, and enjoy your completed Judd plushie!
