Cotton Candy Headband

This was such a fun and simple weekend project.

The headband ties up in the back, allowing for even more adjust-ability.

With the dense fabric on the side, it can be worn as an accessory, or to keep your ears warm this fall and winter.

Sizes

All sizes are 3” (8 cm) wide

Small: 20” (51 cm) circumference

Medium: 21.5” (55 cm) circumference

Large: 23” (58 cm) circumference

Abbreviations Used – US crochet terms

  • ch – chain
  • st – stitch
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sc – single crochet
  • sc inc – work 2 sc into same st
  • sc dec – single crochet decrease
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • hdcblo – half double crochet in the back loop only

Gauge

16 st per 4” (10 cm)

10 rows hdc per 4” (10 cm)

Headband

Same for all sizes.

Start with main color yarn and a slip knot. Ch 9.

row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook, and each ch across (8 st)

row 2: ch 1, turn, sc in each st across (8 st)

row 3: ch 1, turn, sc inc, 6 sc, sc inc (10 st)

row 4-9: ch 1, turn, sc in each st across (10 st)

row 10: ch 1, turn, sc inc, 8 sc, sc inc (12 st)

row 11-12: ch 1, turn, sc in each st across (12 st)

row 13-15: ch 1, turn, hdcblo in each st across (12 st)

row 16: ch 1, turn, hdc in 1st st,

  • (ch 2, sk 2 st, hdc in next 2 st) repeat twice
  • ch 2, sk 2 st, hdc in last st (6 hdc, 3 ch 2)

row 17: ch 1, turn, hdc in 1st st,

  • 2 hdc in ch 2 sp,
  • ch 2, sk 2 st, 2 hdc in ch 2 sp (repeat twice)
  • hdc in last st (8 hdc, 2 ch 2)

row 18: ch 1, turn, hdc in 1st st

  • (ch 2, sk 2 st, 2 hdc in ch 2 sp) repeat twice

row 19 – 23: repeat rows 17 and 18

row 24: ch 1, turn, hdc in each st and 2 hdc in ch 2 spaces (12 st)

row 25-27: ch 1, turn, hdcblo in each st across (12 st)

row 28: ch 1, turn, hdc in first 3 st

  • ch 2, sk 2, hdc in next 2 st

row 29 – 35: alternate rows 18 and 17 (starting with row 18)

row 36: ch 1, turn, hdc in each st, 2 hdc in ch 2 spaces (12 st)

Cut your yarn and weave in any ends.

Back of Headband

  • This is the only part of the pattern that varies in size and creates the differences between small, medium and large.
  • The instructions are given in the following format:
    • small (medium, large)
    • follow the instructions that correspond to the size you are making.

Switch to contrast color yarn, and join with a sl st to the end of the band

row 1: sc in each st across (8 sc)

row 2: ch 1, turn, sc dec, 4 sc, sc dec (6 sc)

row 3: ch 1, turn, sc dec, 2 sc, sc dec (4 sc)

row 4: ch 1, turn, sc in each st across (4 sc)

repeat row 4 – 7 (10, 13) times

Cut yarn and repeat these steps on the other end of the headband.

If you don’t want the bow at the back of the headband, you can sew your two ends together and proceed to the edging.

Ties

Change yarn to main colour, and join with a sl st to either end of the headband

Row 1-5: ch 1, turn, sc across (4 st)

row 6: ch 1, turn, sc inc, 2 sc, sc inc (6 st)

row 7-9: ch 1, turn, sc across (6 st)

row 10: ch 1, turn, sc inc, 4 sc, sc inc (8 st)

row 11-13: ch 1, turn, sc across (8 st)

row 14: ch 1, turn, sc dec, 4 sc, sc dec (6 st)

row 15: ch 1, turn, sc across (6 st)

row 16: ch 1, turn, sc dec, 2 sc, sc dec (4 st)

row 17-18: ch 1, turn, sc across (4 st)

row 19: ch 1, turn, sc dec twice (2 st)

row 20-21: ch 1, turn, sc across (2 st)

row 22: ch 1, turn, sc dec (1 st)

Cut yarn and repeat on the other side. Weave in any ends.

Edging

Switch back to contrast color yarn and join anywhere along the edge with a sl st. Sc evenly around the whole headband. When you reach your first st, join with a sl st and weave in any ends.
