Berries and Cream Mittens

You can purchase a full color, ad free, printable PDF here, for $1.99.

You can find the matching patterns for the Berries and Cream Scarf here, and the Berries and Cream Hat coming soon!

I know it’s July, and mitten season  is a long way off, but after my Berries and Cream Scarf, I wanted to find a project to use the left over Caron Cake on.  These mittens work up fast (about 2-3 hours per pair, and I am not particularly fast), and would make great teacher, bus driver or crossing guard Christmas Gifts.  Or add them to a Berries and Cream Scarf and Berries and Cream Hat (coming soon!)  for a gift exchange or fund-raiser donation.

I adore how these mittens turn out using cake yarn. Each mitten is different, but I think they still look good as a pair even though they are not identical. A cute idea would be to turn a cake (or multiple cakes) into mittens and then pair them up how ever you like. You could also manipulate the cake yarn (but cutting and separating the colors) to make the mittens have the same striping pattern.

Medium: 7”-8” (18-20 cm) circumference, 10.5” (27 cm) long

  • 61g (2.1 oz), 108 m (118 yds)

Gauge

Be sure to check your gauge before you begin.  You want to make sure your mittens will be the right size, and won’t come out fitting massive hands or toddlers.

13 stitches = 4”/10 cm

11 rows hdc = 4”/10 cm

If you made the Berries and Cream Scarf, you could use that to measure your gauge since it has large sections on hdc rows.

Materials

Abbreviations – US crochet terms

  • hdc – half double crochet
  • hdc dec – half double crochet decrease
  • ch – chain
  • sl st – slip st
  • sc – single crochet
  • sc dec – single crochet decrease
  • scblo – single crochet in the back loop only

Mittens are worked in continuous rounds. There is no joining at the end of each round, just continue working in a spiral. Make sure to mark your first or last stitch to know where your next row starts.
